This is a good short article http://bit.ly/fVwAY9 about jconsole, I used this console on development environments, but in a complex distributed JEE production environment jconsole is not good enough, on this kind  of complex environment the best tool that I have ever used was CA Wily Introscope, this is a very expensive tool but it is the best one, easy to use, easy to install and easy to configure.
